
How Master Key Systems Work — and Why the Design Phase Matters Most
A keying hierarchy is built around a logical pyramid. At the base are individual change keys, each opening exactly one lock. Above those sit sub-master keys that cover a defined zone — say, all offices on the second floor. A master key opens every lock within a building or wing, and a grand master sits above that, serving multi-building campuses or landlords who own several Irvington properties at once. The power of the system is in its structure: each cylinder is pinned to respond to its own change key AND to every key level above it, while blocking every key that should not fit.
